How to calculate percentage from marks
- Add the marks you obtained in the subjects or papers you want to include.
- Add the maximum marks for those same subjects or papers.
- Enter both totals and select Calculate percentage.
Marks-percentage formula
Percentage = (marks obtained ÷ maximum marks) × 100.
For example, 450 marks out of 600 gives (450 ÷ 600) × 100 = 75%. A score of 22.5 out of 25 gives 90%. Decimal marks are supported.
Combining subjects with different maximum marks
Use the combined totals, rather than averaging the individual percentages. For example, 80 out of 100 in one subject and 30 out of 50 in another gives 110 out of 150 = 73.33%. The average of 80% and 60% would be 70%, which is not the percentage of the combined marks.
If your institution uses subject weights, a best-of-subjects rule or another prescribed method, use its official calculation instead. This calculator performs a simple total-marks calculation.
Percentage and percentile are different
A marks percentage compares your marks with the maximum available marks. A percentile describes a result relative to other candidates under the examination authority’s method. This calculator does not calculate percentile, rank, grade, division or eligibility.
Why a total may be rejected
The maximum must be greater than zero. Obtained marks must be from zero to that maximum. Empty fields, negative marks and marks above the maximum need correction before calculation; the tool does not silently change them.
Rounding and privacy
The formula uses your entered numbers and rounds only the displayed result to two decimal places. For example, one mark out of three displays as 33.33%. Inputs are processed in this browser tab and are not uploaded or saved.
