On September 30, 2026, the Union Cabinet approved a significant financial package amounting to ₹2,79,157 crore (approximately ₹2.79 trillion) aimed at strengthening agricultural support, renewable energy infrastructure, and urban traffic management.

Key Components of the Cabinet Approval

1. Higher Minimum Support Prices (MSPs) for Rabi Crops

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs sanctioned increased MSPs for six mandated Rabi crops for the 2027-28 marketing season, with an estimated payment to farmers of ₹90,962 crore.

  • Safflower: Highest hike of ₹675 per quintal
  • Rapeseed and Mustard: ₹413 per quintal increase
  • Lentil (Masur): ₹390 per quintal increase
  • Barley: ₹136 per quintal increase
  • Gram: ₹83 per quintal increase
  • Wheat: ₹25 per quintal increase

The MSP acts as a government-guaranteed price to protect farmers’ incomes and encourage production of these winter-sown crops.

2. Green Energy Corridor Phase-III

This phase of the Green Energy Corridor project involves an outlay of ₹1,86,405 crore with a Central Financial Support of ₹54,082 crore. The scheme focuses on strengthening India’s intra-state transmission infrastructure to evacuate up to 135 GW of renewable energy by FY 2032-33.

The project includes the deployment of 50 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems to enhance grid stability and facilitate renewable power integration.

3. Intelligent Traffic Management System for Delhi

With an estimated cost of ₹1,790 crore, the Delhi Police will implement a smart traffic management system across 42 key traffic corridors in the capital.

The project will roll out in three phases over 24 months, including five years of operation and maintenance. Its features comprise AI-enabled traffic signals, real-time congestion detection, automated traffic rule enforcement, and priority for emergency vehicles.

Why This Matters for Competitive Exam Learners

  • MSP Policy: Understanding MSP adjustments helps grasp government efforts to support farmers and agricultural economics.
  • Renewable Energy Infrastructure: The Green Energy Corridor supports India's ambitious renewable capacity targets, a key topic in energy security and environment-related questions.
  • Urban Infrastructure Development: Delhi’s intelligent traffic system exemplifies smart city initiatives and technology’s role in governance.

These developments reflect government priorities in rural welfare, sustainable energy, and urban management, essential dimensions of India’s policy landscape.
