It can climb vertical waterfalls up to 15 metres high by using specialised hook-like projections on its fins and strong muscles, enabling it to resist powerful water currents. This behaviour helps the fish access upstream habitats with fewer predators and competition, enhancing survival and breeding opportunities. However, the species faces threats from illegal fishing using fine-mesh nets and habitat disruption due to water withdrawal for irrigation, risking population decline.
