In FY26 (2025-26), China overtook the United States to become India’s largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching USD 151.1 billion. India’s imports from China rose by 16% to USD 131.63 billion, while exports to China increased sharply by 36.66% to USD 19.47 billion. Despite export growth, the trade deficit with China reached a record USD 112.6 billion. Meanwhile, India’s trade surplus with the United States narrowed to USD 34.4 billion due to a modest increase in exports coupled with rising imports. These developments highlight India’s sustained reliance on Chinese imports, especially in sectors such as electronics, machinery, and raw materials.
