Supreme Court of India Sets Minimum Standards for ICU Facilities in Hospitals
On April 20, 2026, the Supreme Court of India mandated uniform minimum standards for Intensive Care Units (ICUs) across the country. A three-member expert committee framed practical guidelines focusing on infrastructure, staffing, and patient care to ensure quality intensive treatment for critically ill patients. These include dedicated ICU spaces with essential equipment such as ventilators, multiparameter monitors, oxygen supply, and suction facilities, staffed round-the-clock by trained doctors and nurses meeting specified nurse-patient ratios. The ICUs are classified into different levels based on capacity and services. States and Union Territories have been directed to submit action plans by May 18, 2026, outlining implementation strategies. This initiative aims to standardize ICU care and reduce healthcare disparities in urban and rural areas.
Supreme Court Recognizes Right to Safe Travel on National Highways under Article 21
