GE Aerospace Ships Four More F404-IN20 Engines to HAL for Tejas Mk-1A

GE Aerospace announced on 7 October 2026 that it shipped four F404-IN20 engines to HAL in September 2026 for the Tejas LCA Mk-1A. This note covers the engine count, the contract background, the delivery delay and the static facts useful for defence current-affairs revision.

GE Aerospace announced on 7 October 2026 that it had shipped four F404-IN20 engines to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk-1A. The shipment itself was made in September 2026. The announcement matters because engine supply has been a bottleneck in the Mk-1A programme, and the Indian Air Force (IAF) is waiting for its first aircraft under the 2021 contract.

What happened and when

  • Shipment (completed): four F404-IN20 engines were shipped in September 2026.
  • Announcement (completed): GE Aerospace made the announcement on 7 October 2026. Both The Hindu and GKToday carried reports dated 7 October 2026, so those are source publication dates, not the shipment date.
  • Running total: the reports indicate 14 engines have been supplied to HAL so far. That is 10 received earlier plus the four now shipped.
  • Recent pace: The Hindu says seven engines have been sent in the last two months. GKToday reports three engines in August 2026, which matches 3 + 4.

One wording point: GE Aerospace's own description, as reported, is that the engines were shipped. GKToday's headline says "delivers". The evidence does not give a date on which HAL received these four engines, so "shipped in September 2026" is the safer phrasing.

Why the engine supply matters

The Hindu reports that at least 25 Tejas airframes are ready and HAL is waiting for engines. It also says the delay in engine deliveries has held up aircraft handovers to the IAF. The same report says HAL has not yet delivered a single Mk-1A fighter to the IAF.

The Hindu also reports that Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh said the delayed induction is hurting the air force, citing the depleting strength of its fighter squadrons. In September, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called for realistic project timelines, warning that delays can create capability gaps, raise costs and increase the risk of technology obsolescence.

The 83-aircraft contract and the missed schedule

According to The Hindu, the Defence Ministry signed a ₹48,000-crore deal with HAL in February 2021 for 83 Tejas Mk-1A jets. The contract covers 73 Mk-1A fighters and 10 LCA Tejas Mk-1 Trainer aircraft. All deliveries were meant to be complete within eight years of signing. The 2021 announcement said HAL would deliver three aircraft in the third year and then 16 per year for the next five years.

GKToday adds that the first aircraft was due in March 2024, and that delayed engine supply and delays in key certifications contributed to the miss. The Hindu does not independently state the March 2024 date, so treat it as a single-source detail.

Scheduled and expected events (not yet completed)

As of 9 October 2026, the following are expectations or assurances, not completed events:

  • GE Aerospace has assured HAL of 20 engine deliveries between June and December 2026. This window is still running.
  • GE Aerospace expects to supply more than 20 engines a year from 2027.
  • Deliveries of aircraft under the first contract are expected to begin in December 2026, with induction expected by the end of 2026 (GKToday). No Mk-1A delivery to the IAF had been reported as of the sources' publication.

Static facts for exam revision

  • HAL is a public-sector aerospace and defence company under the Ministry of Defence.
  • The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), under DRDO, led the design of the LCA Tejas, and HAL is the manufacturer.
  • The Tejas is a lightweight, single-engine, supersonic combat aircraft developed in India. The Mk-1A is an upgraded variant of the Mk-1.
  • The F404-IN20 is an afterburning turbofan produced by GE Aerospace, a U.S. company.
  • GKToday says the Mk-1A is meant to replace the IAF's retired MiG-21 fighters.

These are background facts that fit defence current-affairs revision. Nothing here indicates that any question will be asked in an exam.

Evidence limits

  • The 97-aircraft order of September 2025, the 24-aircraft annual capacity of HAL's Bengaluru and Nashik lines, and the ₹5,375-crore engine value come only from GKToday.
  • GKToday says HAL is imposing contractual penalties on GE Aerospace for delays. The Hindu report does not mention penalties, and no amount is given, so treat this as unconfirmed here.
  • The evidence does not say whether the 14 engines count towards the 20-engine June–December 2026 assurance, so no progress figure against that target is given.
