Mahindra and Embraer Identify Nagpur for a Proposed C-390 Final Assembly Line

Mahindra Group and Embraer have identified Nagpur as the potential site for a C-390 Millennium Final Assembly Line in India. The plan depends on the aircraft being selected for the IAF's Medium Transport Aircraft programme, and no order is reported yet.

Mahindra Group and Brazil's Embraer have identified Nagpur, Maharashtra, as the potential site for a Final Assembly Line (FAL) for the C-390 Millennium military transport aircraft. Embraer's release is dated 1 October 2026, and GKToday covered it on 2 October 2026. The plan is conditional: it depends on the C-390 being selected by the Government of India and an order being placed under the Indian Air Force (IAF) Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) programme. The evidence reviewed does not report such a selection or order.

What was announced, and what was not

According to Embraer's release, issued from Mumbai on 1 October 2026, the two companies are continuing preparatory discussions and planning for an industrial and support ecosystem for the C-390 in India. They are working with the Government of Maharashtra and have identified Nagpur for a potential FAL. The release says the facility would proceed only if the aircraft is chosen and an MTA order is placed.

Some headlines, including GKToday's, use the word "select". The company release is more cautious: its own headline says Nagpur is the location "if selected". For exam notes, "proposed" or "potential" is the safer description.

Why it matters

The announcement shows how large defence aircraft programmes can be tied to domestic assembly and industrial participation. Both companies link their plans to the government's Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat objectives. If the programme is awarded to the partnership, they say they intend to bring Indian aerospace companies progressively into the aircraft's ecosystem. That would cover manufacturing, aftermarket services, training and lifecycle support.

For Maharashtra, a FAL at Nagpur would be an aerospace manufacturing facility. The companies say it would bring know-how in aircraft assembly, system integration, manufacturing engineering and local supply chain development. These are intentions, not delivered outcomes.

The C-390 Millennium and the MTA programme

The aircraft

The C-390 Millennium is a medium-lift military transport aircraft developed by Embraer. Embraer describes it as multi-mission: troop and cargo transport, airdrop, medical evacuation, search and rescue, firefighting and humanitarian tasks. The release gives a payload capacity of up to 26 tonnes and says it can operate from temporary or unpaved runways.

The IAF programme

GKToday says India may procure 60 to 80 aircraft under the IAF MTA programme. That figure is not in Embraer's release, and the evidence offers no official procurement document confirming it. Treat it as a media-reported estimate, not a confirmed order size.

Key terms for exam preparation

  • Final Assembly Line (FAL): the last stage of aircraft production, where major sections and systems are brought together and integrated.
  • MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul): facilities for servicing, inspection, repair and lifecycle support of aircraft.
  • Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat: initiatives associated with domestic manufacturing and self-reliance, which both companies cite as the policy context.
  • Who is involved: Embraer (Brazil), Mahindra Group (India), the Government of Maharashtra, the Government of India and the IAF.

This background suits current-affairs revision on defence, places in news and industrial policy. It does not imply that any particular question will appear in an exam.

Limits of the evidence

  • The evidence has no investment figure, construction timeline, production capacity, job estimate or tender schedule for the Nagpur facility.
  • Embraer's release carries a forward-looking-statements caution. It cites the outcome of the IAF procurement process, government approvals and definitive agreements as risks.
  • The release does not say whether other aircraft are competing in the programme, so this post makes no claim about that.
  • GKToday is a secondary summary of the company announcement. Where the two differ in tone, this post follows Embraer's conditional wording.

FAQ

Has the IAF ordered the C-390?

The evidence reviewed does not report any selection or order.

When was the announcement made?

Embraer's release is dated 1 October 2026. GKToday's article is dated 2 October 2026. The earlier agreements date from February 2024 (MoU) and October 2025 (Strategic Cooperation Agreement).
