The United States Trade Representative (USTR) in its 2026 Special 301 Report has placed India on the Priority Watch List, signaling ongoing significant concerns over the country’s intellectual property (IP) protection and enforcement mechanisms. India joins nations like China, Russia, and Venezuela on this list, which highlights issues such as patent protection delays, trademark counterfeiting, market access barriers for IP-intensive industries, and inadequate enforcement. While India has made reforms and engaged with the US, gaps remain, particularly in sectors like pharmaceuticals, digital content, and technology. This designation implies heightened scrutiny and potential trade-related consequences under Section 301 of the US Trade Act of 1974 if issues persist.
India Launches First Barrier-Free Multi-Lane Free Flow Tolling System on NH-48
India has introduced its first barrier-free tolling system as a step towards modernizing its highway infrastructure. Launched on May 1, 2026, at the Choryasi Toll Plaza on the Delhi–Mumbai National Highway (NH-48) in Gujarat, the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system enables seamless vehicle passage without stopping, using advanced technologies such as Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and FASTag RFID for automatic toll collection. This innovation is aimed at reducing congestion, travel time, fuel consumption, and vehicular emissions. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways plans to extend the MLFF system to all four-lane and above highways by 2029.
Telangana’s Adilabad Celebrates Annual Mahua Flower Festival ‘Ippa Puvvu Panduga’
The annual Mahua flower festival, locally known as ‘Ippa Puvvu Panduga’, is celebrated with traditional fervour in Jamidi village of Narnoor mandal, Adilabad district, Telangana. Dijo Kappan, a noted social activist and advocate for consumer rights from Pala, Kerala, passed away on May 1, 2026, at the age of 68. He founded the Centre for Consumer Education in 1988, focusing on consumer and farmers' rights and led numerous public interest litigations to address systemic issues harming consumers and citizens. Russia Successfully Test-Launches Soyuz-5 Rocket Featuring Advanced Liquid-Fuel Engine
On April 30, 2026, Russia achieved a significant milestone by successfully test-launching the Soyuz-5 rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The Soyuz-5 is a next-generation medium-lift launch vehicle capable of carrying payloads up to 17 tonnes to low Earth orbit. Equipped with a powerful liquid-fuelled RD-171MV engine on the first stage and two RD-0124MS engines on the second stage, it represents a major modernization effort to replace older Soviet-era rockets such as the Zenit. Karnataka Launches India’s First State-led Centre of Excellence for Space Technology
On 1 May 2026, Karnataka inaugurated India’s first state-led Centre of Excellence for Space Technology (CoE SpaceTech Foundation) in Bengaluru. Established by the Karnataka Innovation and Technology Society (KITS) in collaboration with the Satcom Industry Association of India (SIA-India), the centre aims to accelerate research, innovation, and commercial applications of space technology. It will foster public-private partnerships, support startups, and focus on capacity-building in sectors such as agriculture, climate monitoring, disaster management, connectivity, and healthcare.
