On 17 May 2026, India completed its first domestically assembled Airbus C-295 military transport aircraft at the Tata-Airbus facility in Vadodara, Gujarat, marking a significant milestone under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The programme includes a contract signed in September 2021 for 56 aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF), with 16 delivered fly-away from Spain and 40 manufactured in India by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL). The assembly line was inaugurated on 28 October 2024 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. The C-295 will replace the aging Avro-748 fleet and is designed for tactical transport roles including troop movement, cargo carriage, medical evacuation, and special operations.
Karnataka Introduces Alcohol-in-Beverage (AIB) Taxation Policy in 2026
On 11 May 2026, Karnataka implemented a new Alcohol-in-Beverage (AIB) excise duty system, transitioning from a bulk litre-based taxation to a system linked directly to actual alcohol content in beverages. This reform reduced excise slabs from 16 to 8 and adjusted prices: beers with 5% alcohol by volume became 20-25% cheaper (including brands like Kingfisher Premium, Budweiser, and Heineken), premium whiskies such as Black Label and Chivas Regal saw approx. 20% price reductions, while budget Indian-Made Liquor (IML) brands increased in price by 20-30%. Karnataka is the first Indian state to adopt this internationally recognized AIB taxation standard to rationalize pricing, improve revenue collection, and address public health. The draft policy was released on 18 April 2026 for public consultation, and the final notification issued on 8 May 2026.
WHO Declares Ebola Outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern
On 17 May 2026, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). The outbreak is centered in the eastern Ituri province of DRC with confirmed cases also in Kampala, Uganda. It is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, one of the Ebola virus species first identified in Uganda in 2007. As of 16 May 2026, over 246 suspected cases and more than 80 suspected deaths were reported in Ituri province, and Uganda reported two cases, including one death. WHO has allocated emergency funds and deployed experts to assist response efforts.

The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) led a delegation of nine Indian private space-tech companies to participate in Space Meetings Veneto 2026 held in Venice, Italy from 16 to 17 May 2026. The delegation, headed by Dr. P.K. Jain of IN-SPACe, marked a significant step under the India–Italy Joint Strategic Action Plan (2025–2029) announced at the 2024 G20 Summit, boosting bilateral cooperation in space technology. During the event, Indian companies signed multiple agreements with Italian counterparts, focusing on satellite systems, launch services, ground station infrastructure, and mission operations, exemplifying India's expanding footprint in the global space economy.
Kami Rita Sherpa Climbs Mount Everest for 32nd Time, Sets New World Record
On 17 May 2026, Nepali Sherpa guide Kami Rita Sherpa achieved a historic milestone by summiting Mount Everest for the 32nd time. This ascent was confirmed by Nepal’s Department of Tourism at Everest Base Camp, making Kami Rita the mountaineer with the highest number of Everest summits. Born on 17 January 1970 in Solukhumbu, Nepal, Kami Rita first climbed Everest in 1994 and has since completed multiple ascents of other major 8,000-metre peaks including Cho Oyu and Manaslu. His record-breaking achievement highlights his extraordinary endurance and pivotal role in Nepal's mountaineering legacy.
Delhi Government Announces Collateral-Free Loans up to ₹10 Crore for Women Self-Help Groups and Startups
On 17 May 2026, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced that the Delhi government will provide collateral-free loans of up to ₹10 crore to women-led self-help groups (SHGs) and startups. The government will act as the guarantor for these loans, aiming to empower women entrepreneurs and promote indigenous businesses across sectors such as handicrafts, food processing, khadi, fashion, retail, and digital enterprises. This initiative was unveiled during the Mega Self Help Group (SHG) Mela-2026 held in northwest Delhi and aligns with national policies like Atmanirbhar Bharat, Vocal for Local, and One District One Product.
