  1. India’s First Indigenous Semiconductor Assembly and Test Facility Launched in Assam

    On 13 March 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the greenfield Tata Electronics Semiconductor Assembly and Test facility at Jagiroad, Morigaon district, Assam. This ₹27,000 crore project aims to produce up to 48 million semiconductor chips daily for sectors like automotive, telecommunications, AI, and consumer electronics. As part of the India Semiconductor Mission launched in 2021, the facility will bolster domestic chip production capabilities, generate over 27,000 jobs, and position Assam as a key semiconductor hub. The first phase of the plant is expected to be operational by mid-2025, marking a significant step toward India's self-reliance in semiconductor manufacturing.

  2. NASA Astronauts Conduct Advanced Cancer and Cartilage Research on ISS in 2026

  3. India-Africa Forum Summit 2026 Postponed Due to Ebola Outbreak

    The Fourth India-Africa Forum Summit, originally planned for 28-31 May 2026 in New Delhi, was postponed on 21 May 2026 by India and the African Union due to an evolving public health emergency involving an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. The outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus and was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by the World Health Organization (WHO) on 16 May 2026. India reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) in response efforts. The summit serves as a key diplomatic platform for strengthening economic, technical, and developmental cooperation between India and African countries.   4. NCDEX launches India's first SEBI-approved weather derivatives contract RAINMUMBAI

    On 20 May 2026, the National Commodities and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) announced RAINMUMBAI, India's inaugural exchange-traded, SEBI-approved weather derivatives contract. This cash-settled futures instrument is linked to rainfall deviations from the Long Period Average (LPA) in Mumbai during the monsoon months (June to September). Developed with IIT Bombay and based on official rainfall data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the contract offers a financial risk management tool for sectors affected by monsoon variability, such as agriculture, construction, power utilities, logistics, and banking.

  7. Manindra Agrawal Elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 2026

    Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society on 20 May 2026.
