  3. Kerala Launches HAWK: India's First Judiciary-Integrated Digital Wildlife Offence Management System

On 6 June 2026, the Kerala Forest Department launched HAWK (Hostile Activity Watch Kernel), a pioneering digital platform in India that integrates judiciary and wildlife offence management. Using an API, HAWK links forest enforcement records with the District Court Management System, enabling comprehensive tracking of wildlife crime cases from the filing of Preliminary Offence Reports to final court verdicts. The system eliminates physical paperwork, facilitates real-time case monitoring, and consolidates ecological intelligence such as wildlife mortality and illegal weapon seizures. Developed with the Wildlife Trust of India and supported by NTT Data, over 1,750 forest officers have been trained in its use, marking a significant modernization in Kerala’s wildlife crime enforcement and judicial process integration.

  4. India sets ambitious $30 billion seafood export target by 2031

India aims to nearly quadruple its seafood export value from about $8.5 billion in FY 2025-26 to $30 billion by 2031. This target was announced in June 2026 during a national workshop in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The strategy involves improving production quality, expanding market access through nine new Free Trade Agreements with developed countries, and upgrading infrastructure such as cold chains at major ports like Kochi and Visakhapatnam. Shrimp is a major export product, and Andhra Pradesh accounts for 66% of shrimp exports. The plan emphasizes sustainability certifications (ASC and BAP), digital traceability through the National Traceability Framework launched on World Fisheries Day 2025, and expansion of deep-sea fishing within India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana supports fisheries development and infrastructure projects such as a Smart and Integrated Fishing Harbour at Kakinada.

  8. Marine Microfossils and Antarctic Climate Research

Marine microfossils, microscopic fossil remains of planktonic organisms such as foraminifera and diatoms, serve as vital proxies in reconstructing Antarctica's palaeoclimate. Analyses of these fossils from sediment cores and drilling expeditions in the Southern Ocean and Antarctic sites (e.g., Seymour Island, Ross Sea) have revealed past ice–ocean–climate interactions. These studies provide insights into historic sea-surface temperature, salinity, ocean circulation, and ice cover changes. The Antarctic Ice Sheet's history gleaned from microfossil evidence enhances understanding of past sea-level fluctuations and climate variability, critical for modelling future climate scenarios.
