Google's planned AI hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, is an investment of about USD 15 billion over 2026–2030, described by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) as Google's largest investment in India to date. As of 15 October 2026 the project is under development, not finished. A GKToday report dated 13 October 2026 says the data-centre facility is expected to become operational in 2028.

Timeline: announced, ongoing and still to come
Announced
The PIB release is dated 14 October 2025. It reports remarks made at Bharat AI Shakti, an event hosted by Google ahead of its participation in the India AI Summit. The release does not give a separate event date, so the PIB posting date is the safest reference for the announcement. The GKToday article was published on 13 October 2026, a year later, and is a source publication date, not the date of the announcement.
Ongoing as of 15 October 2026
- The 2026–2030 investment period is under way.
- GKToday reports that an Andhra Pradesh High Court challenge to the environmental clearances, filed in August 2026, did not halt construction.
- Three petitions challenging the environmental clearances have been filed before the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The sources do not give their outcome.
Expected, not completed
- The facility is expected to become operational in 2028. It has not been completed.
- The sources do not give a construction start date, a completion date for the subsea gateway, or the dates by which power infrastructure will be ready.
What the AI hub includes
According to PIB, the hub brings together AI infrastructure, data-centre capacity, large-scale renewable energy and an expanded fibre-optic network. Google says the campus will use the same kind of infrastructure that powers products such as Search, Workspace and YouTube. Once operational, it will join Google's network of AI data centres across 12 countries.
In simple terms, a data centre houses servers, storage and networking equipment. AI computing uses this equipment to train and run machine-learning systems.
Subsea gateway and connectivity
PIB says the investment includes a new international subsea gateway, with multiple cables landing in Visakhapatnam on India's eastern coast. It would add route diversity to existing cable landings in the Mumbai and Chennai areas. Submarine cables carry data between countries through fibre-optic lines on the seabed.
At the same event, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw proposed a Vizag–Sittwe (Myanmar) digital link to help North-Eastern states, and suggested the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as a possible global internet data-transfer hub. These were statements and proposals in the PIB release. The sources do not show that they have been approved or built.
Role in India's AI policy
The Minister said the hub would help meet the goals of the India AI Mission. He welcomed Google's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) as an option to compete with Nvidia's Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) within the common compute infrastructure under that mission. PIB also links the investment to the Viksit Bharat Vision.
Power, water and environmental concerns
GKToday quotes Google's Asia-Pacific infrastructure and energy head, Alexander Smith. He said Google assessed the local watershed before choosing air-cooling instead of water-based cooling. Google has also pledged to replenish 120% of the freshwater it uses for non-cooling needs across its operations by 2030.
Residents and campaigners have raised concerns about freshwater availability, ecological risks and pressure on electricity supply. Google says it will fund the required power-infrastructure upgrades and invest in more clean-energy projects in Visakhapatnam. PIB adds that Google will work with local partners on new transmission lines, clean energy generation and energy storage in Andhra Pradesh.
Land, jobs and economic claims
- Land: Some villagers in Tarluvada allege land was acquired without adequate notice and that promised benefits did not materialise. The Andhra Pradesh government disputes claims of forcible acquisition and says eligible residents received compensation.
- Local economic activity: Google estimates about USD 688 million a year.
- Construction jobs: Google says a typical data-centre project employs about 4,200 construction workers a year over a three-to-five-year build, then supports hundreds of specialist on-site roles.
- State projection: The Andhra Pradesh government projects 188,000 direct and indirect jobs.
These figures are estimates and projections from Google and the state government, not independently verified outcomes. The sources do not explain how they were calculated.
Evidence limits to keep in mind
- The two sources differ slightly on partner names (Adani Group versus AdaniConnex and Airtel). Revise both, attributed to their source.
- The claim that this is Google's largest AI hub outside the United States comes from GKToday only. PIB says it is Google's largest investment in India.
- The sources do not report the outcome of the NGT or High Court proceedings.
Exam-relevant background
GKToday notes that the National Green Tribunal was established under the National Green Tribunal Act, 2010, to handle environmental cases. It applies principles including sustainable development, the precautionary principle and the polluter-pays principle. It is a statutory body headquartered in New Delhi, with zonal benches in several parts of India.
