JANANI Digital Healthcare Platform Launched for Maternal and Child Health

On 7 May 2026, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare launched JANANI, a comprehensive digital platform aimed at strengthening maternal and child healthcare across India. It upgrades the existing Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) portal by enabling seamless tracking of beneficiaries, real-time monitoring, and interoperable health record management for women during their reproductive years. The platform features QR-enabled digital Mother and Child Health cards, automated alerts for high-risk pregnancies, due date reminders, and real-time dashboards for supervisory and frontline health workers. JANANI integrates with national programs including ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account), U-WIN (immunisation), and POSHAN Abhiyaan (nutrition) to facilitate convergence and continuity of care. At launch, it had registered over 1.34 crore beneficiaries and generated more than 30 lakh digital health cards.

Background & Context

Maternal and child health services in India encompass antenatal care, delivery preparedness, institutional delivery, postnatal care, newborn care including home-based newborn and young child care, immunization, nutrition support, and family planning. While the Reproductive and Child Health programme laid the foundation for these services, challenges in real-time monitoring, data fragmentation, and continuity of care remained. JANANI was developed to digitally transform maternal and child health administration by creating longitudinal health records, enabling seamless information exchange and improving coverage, accountability, and outcomes.

Why This Matters for Exams / Exam Relevance

JANANI exemplifies India’s commitment to leveraging digital technology to enhance public healthcare delivery, especially for maternal and child health — a key focus area in national health policy. The platform’s launch and its integrated approach with flagship schemes like ABHA and POSHAN Abhiyaan reflect critical government initiatives promoting health data interoperability, beneficiary-centric care, and cross-sectoral coordination. Understanding JANANI’s objectives, features, and ecosystem integration is essential for competitive exams covering Indian health schemes, digital health reforms, and government programs targeting women and children.
