  1. Uttar Pradesh Inaugurates India's First Integrated Lithium-ion Battery and Rare Earth Magnet Recycling Facility

Uttar Pradesh has inaugurated India’s first integrated recycling facility for lithium-ion batteries and rare earth magnets located in Sikandrabad, developed by Rocklink India. With an initial lithium-ion battery recycling capacity of 10,000 tonnes per year and processing 60 tonnes of rare earth magnets monthly, the facility supports India’s clean energy transition and critical minerals self-reliance. Registered under EPR norms, the plant ensures over 98% recovery of valuable metals while managing hazardous emissions, and also offers battery cell refurbishment to extend battery life. The plant is poised to start rare-earth chloride processing by 2026, enhancing circular supply chains for EVs, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing sectors.

  2. General Upendra Dwivedi Inducted into US Army War College International Hall of Fame

General Upendra Dwivedi, the 30th Chief of Army Staff of India, was inducted into the International Hall of Fame of the US Army War College located at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, in April 2026. He is only the third Indian Army chief to receive this honor after Generals V.K. Singh and Bikram Singh. 3. Sperm Whale Communication Shows Human-Like Language Patterns

Recent scientific research led by Project CETI and MIT CSAIL has revealed that sperm whales communicate using complex vocalizations resembling human language structures. These vocalizations, known as codas, consist of sequences of clicks that exhibit phonetic-like patterns, including vowel-like elements, rhythm, tempo variation, ornamentation, and combinatorial structures. This challenges prior assumptions that complex communication is unique to humans and points to sophisticated social interactions and possible cultural transmission among sperm whales.

  4. China Resumes Panda Diplomacy by Sending Giant Pandas to Zoo Atlanta

In 2025, China announced a decade-long conservation partnership by sending two giant pandas, Ping Ping (male) and Fu Shuang (female), from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding to Zoo Atlanta, USA. This move marks the continuation of China's panda diplomacy amidst tensions with the US, ahead of a presidential visit in 2026. The Chinese giant panda loan program fosters goodwill and scientific exchange. The initiative includes upgrades to Atlanta's facilities with technical preparation support from Chinese experts. Giant pandas symbolize US-China friendship since 1972, when pandas were gifted after Nixon’s visit. The collaboration also emphasizes disease prevention, breeding research, and wildlife conservation.

  5. Maharashtra Approves State Compressed Biogas (CBG) Policy 2026 to Boost Clean Energy and Waste Management

Maharashtra Cabinet, under Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, approved the State Compressed Biogas (CBG) Policy 2026 with an allocation of ₹500 crore for FY 2026–27. The policy focuses on converting municipal organic waste and agricultural residue into compressed biogas, a renewable clean fuel, aiming to reduce landfill burden and methane emissions. It employs Public-Private Partnership and Hybrid Annuity Models to support large-scale biogas plants, aligning with the national GOBARdhan scheme to promote scientific waste segregation, clean energy, and circular economy goals across Maharashtra's 423 urban local bodies.

  7. NASA completes assembly of Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, a powerful successor to Hubble

NASA has completed final assembly of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope at Goddard Space Flight Center, aiming for launch in 2026. The observatory has a 2.4-meter mirror like Hubble, but with a field of view nearly 100 times larger, allowing it to survey the cosmos up to 1,000 times faster. It will study dark energy, dark matter, galaxy formation, and exoplanets, equipped with a wide-field instrument and coronagraph for direct exoplanet imaging, operating at the Sun–Earth L2 point.
