  12. India to Mandate Sustainable Aviation Fuel Blending from 2027

India has announced a plan to mandate blending of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) with Aviation Turbine Fuel starting at 1% in 2027 for international flights, increasing to 2% in 2028 and 5% by 2030. The move aligns with the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) mandatory phase beginning in 2027. SAF, a low-carbon fuel produced from biomass, used cooking oil, and alcohol-to-jet pathways, significantly reduces lifecycle CO₂ emissions. Indian Oil Corporation is set to begin SAF production using used cooking oil at its Panipat refinery by September 2026. This policy aims to aid India's environmental commitments and reduce aviation sector emissions.
