On 22 May 2026, the Delhi High Court allowed Olympian wrestler Vinesh Phogat to compete in the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) selection trials for the 2026 Asian Games scheduled for 30–31 May 2026. The WFI had declared her ineligible due to new eligibility criteria restricting trials to reigning national champions, a condition Phogat did not meet because she was on maternity leave since December 2024. The court mandated that the trials be video-recorded and overseen by independent observers nominated by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sports Authority of India, and Indian Olympic Association, thereby emphasizing transparency. The judgment underscores judicial intervention to ensure fairness and equitable participation in sports governance in India.
India's CAFE III Norms (2027-2032) and Their Impact on Automotive Sector
India's Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) Phase III norms, framed by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Ministry of Power, will be enforced from April 1, 2027, to March 31, 2032. These norms apply to M1 category passenger vehicles (up to 9 seats and 3,500 kg gross weight) and mandate a reduction in average fleet CO2 emissions from about 113 g/km in FY27 to 78.9 g/km by FY32. The norm introduces super credit multipliers for Electric Vehicles (EVs) and hybrids to encourage cleaner technologies. Recent drafts have removed relaxed exemptions for small cars and flattened emission targets, leading to stricter requirements for heavier vehicles, thereby incentivizing electrification and fuel efficiency improvement. The removal of derogations is expected to increase prices of entry-level petrol cars due to advanced fuel-saving technologies.

Odisha's Revival Drive to Preserve Bomkai Weaving Tradition
The Odisha Handlooms, Textiles and Handicrafts department has launched a revival plan to rejuvenate the traditional Bomkai weaving art in Ganjam district. Approved in the previous fiscal year, the initiative aims to document authentic Bomkai designs, motifs, and colour specifications, and train new artisans in the original weaving technique. Bomkai sarees, historically linked to Bomkai village in Ganjam and also produced by weavers in Subarnapur district, hold Geographical Indication (GI) status under Indian law. As of May 23, 2026, only two weaving families (Keshab Nayak and Sushanta Kumar Nayak) continue the original weaving practice in Bomkai village. The revival project seeks to address challenges such as migration of younger artisans, aiming to involve surrounding villages to sustain the craft and cultural heritage of Odisha.

National Mission on Edible Oils – Oil Palm (NMEO-OP): Boosting India’s Edible Oil Production
The Indian government launched the National Mission on Edible Oils – Oil Palm (NMEO-OP) in 2021 with a financial outlay of Rs. 11,040 crore. This mission focuses on expanding oil palm cultivation and increasing domestic crude palm oil (CPO) production to reduce import dependence. By November 2025, India had brought 6.20 lakh hectares under oil palm cultivation, nearing the 2025-26 target of 6.5 lakh hectares. Crude palm oil production rose from 1.91 lakh tonnes in 2014-15 to 3.80 lakh tonnes in 2024-25, targeting 11.20 lakh tonnes by 2025-26 and 28 lakh tonnes by 2029-30. Andhra Pradesh accounts for 80% of CPO production. India currently imports around 60% of its edible oil requirement, with palm oil constituting 59% of total edible oil imports, mainly from Indonesia and Malaysia. The mission addresses challenges like high water use, perishability of fresh fruit, and soil fertility to achieve Atmanirbharta (self-reliance) in edible oils.
India Successfully Test-Launches Agni-1 Short-Range Ballistic Missile from Odisha
On 22 May 2026, India successfully test-launched the Agni-1 short-range ballistic missile from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, Odisha. Agni-1 is a single-stage, solid-fuel, road-mobile missile with a range of 700-900 km and capable of carrying 1,000 kg payloads, including nuclear warheads. The test reinforces India's credible minimum deterrence capabilities and quick-reaction strike potential in the region.
India Blocks China’s WTO Panel Request on Solar and IT Goods Measures
On 22 May 2026, India blocked China's initial request at the WTO Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) to establish a dispute panel regarding India's tariffs and incentives on imported information technology and solar energy products. China alleged that India imposed customs duties above WTO bound rates and provided subsidies contingent on local value addition, violating WTO rules. India countered that its measures comply with multilateral trade regulations, highlighting China’s dominance (over 80%) in the global solar module value chain. Under WTO rules, initial panel requests can be blocked, but repeated requests can lead to automatic panel formation. This is part of ongoing China-India trade disputes at the WTO involving renewable energy and IT sectors.
