    Tamil writer Poomani, renowned for his portrayal of rural and marginalized communities, died on 12 July 2026 at age 79 due to age-related health issues. The campaign involved the destruction of seized narcotics and psychotropic substances valued at ₹472.51 crore, including around 60 kg of heroin, 38,000 kg of ganja, 39 kg of morphine, and 4.97 lakh psychotropic tablets. Assam inaugurated its first narcotics incinerator at Daulasal to assist the 10-day disposal exercise using crushing and controlled burning methods. Over the past five years, Assam Police registered more than 3,300 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, seizing drugs worth over ₹3,227 crore. This campaign was part of a centrally coordinated effort, including similar drives across other districts, supported by the Union Home Ministry, which provided the incinerator facility.
