Pakistan Expands Earth-Observation Satellite Network (2025-2026)

Between January 2025 and June 2026, Pakistan launched six Earth-observation satellites—PAUSAT-1, PRSC-EO1, PRSS-2, HS-1, PRSC-EO2, and PRSC-EO3—developed in cooperation with China and launched predominantly from Chinese launch centers using Long March rockets. Notably, HS-1 is Pakistan’s first hyperspectral satellite launched in October 2025, and PRSC-EO3 was launched in April 2026 with an orbit optimized for increased revisit rates over South Asia. These satellites support applications including precision agriculture, environmental monitoring, disaster management, urban planning, and resource surveillance and relate closely to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

Key Facts

  • Pakistan launched six Earth-observation satellites from January 2025 to June 2026: PAUSAT-1, PRSC-EO1, PRSS-2, HS-1, PRSC-EO2, and PRSC-EO3.
  • SUPARCO (Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission) is the national space agency responsible for these satellites.
  • HS-1, launched in October 2025 from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre, is Pakistan’s first hyperspectral satellite.
  • PRSC-EO3 was launched in April 2026 by a Long March-6 rocket from Taiyuan Satellite Launch Centre, China.
  • Most satellites were launched on Chinese rockets from Chinese spaceports, reflecting close China-Pakistan space cooperation.
  • Advanced technologies include hyperspectral imaging, AI-assisted image processing, multi-geometry imaging modules, and advanced energy storage systems.
  • Applications cover precision agriculture, environmental monitoring, urban planning, disaster management, and resource monitoring.

Background & Context

Pakistan has significantly expanded its Earth-observation satellite capabilities with SUPARCO leading partnerships with China involving satellite manufacturing, launch services, and technical support. The integration of hyperspectral imaging allows detailed spectral data collection useful in analyzing land, water, vegetation, and urban features. Satellites are placed in orbits designed for frequent revisits over South Asia, enabling refined environmental and strategic surveillance.

This satellite network supports Pakistan’s national development plans, including disaster preparedness and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), enhancing sustainable infrastructure and environmental oversight.

Why This Matters for Exams / Exam Relevance

Understanding Pakistan’s satellite program is vital for competitive exams covering current affairs, international space cooperation, and South Asian geopolitics. Topics such as SUPARCO's role, satellite names (HS-1, PRSC-EO3), launch details, and technologies like hyperspectral imaging are often queried. Awareness of China-Pakistan collaboration and applications in agriculture, disaster management, and surveillance adds depth to general science and international relations sections.

Points to Remember

  • SUPARCO: Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission, responsible for satellite development and operations.
  • HS-1: Pakistan’s first hyperspectral satellite launched in October 2025, carrying advanced imaging for environmental and agricultural monitoring.
  • PRSC-EO3: Launched April 2026 from Taiyuan on Long March-6 rocket, designed for high revisit rates over South Asia.
  • Satellites launched between January 2025 and June 2026 were mostly developed in China-Pakistan collaboration and use Chinese launch vehicles.
  • Earth-observation satellites serve multi-disciplinary roles including precision agriculture, disaster management, environmental monitoring, and urban planning.
