RRB NTPC Typing Test Details: Speed, Rules and Preparation
A practical explanation of RRB NTPC typing requirements, the CEN 05/2024 instructions and their correction, plus a preparation checklist.
On this page

For the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) Non-Technical Popular Categories (NTPC) graduate posts covered by CEN 05/2024, the typing requirement is 30 words per minute in English or 25 in Hindi. The assessed test lasts 10 minutes. These RRB NTPC typing test details explain that cycle’s published instructions and later correction; check your own Centralised Employment Notice (CEN) number before applying them to another recruitment.
Which posts require the typing test?
CEN 05/2024 specifies the test for Senior Clerk cum Typist and Junior Accounts Assistant cum Typist. It is qualifying: typing-test marks are not added to the merit score. For these posts, merit among candidates who qualify or hold an applicable exemption is based on the second-stage computer-based test (CBT). Official notification, section 13.4.
Keep three documents together when preparing: your detailed notification, the typing-test instructions and any later corrigendum. A corrigendum corrects an earlier instruction. Reading only the first notice can leave you practising under a rule that was subsequently changed.
Speed, language and duration at a glance
Detail | CEN 05/2024 requirement |
|---|---|
English speed | 30 WPM |
Hindi speed | 25 WPM |
Assessed typing | 10 minutes |

Break after warm-up | One minute, following Corrigendum 5 |
Hindi fonts named | Krutidev or Mangal |
The correction dated 24 December 2025 replaced the original 30-second break with a one-minute break. It also clarified that the language follows the candidate’s submitted option; English applies when no option was exercised. Its language-selection deadline was in December 2025 and has passed. Corrigendum 5.
Completing the passage and handling mistakes
The special instructions require at least 300 English words or 250 Hindi words within the allotted time. Candidates must complete the whole passage at least once; after finishing it, they may type it again from the beginning.
Evaluation combines full mistakes and half mistakes, with each half mistake contributing half a mistake. The notice says that mistakes equal to 5% of the total words typed may be ignored. It then deducts ten words per final counted mistake when calculating speed. Reaching the raw word total therefore does not, by itself, establish that the evaluated speed qualifies. Special instructions, points 1 and 4–6.
Editing tools and exemption documents
Section 13.4 specifies computer typing without editing tools or spell-check facilities. It also describes a possible exemption for specified permanent disabilities of at least 40%, supported by a competent medical board’s certificate in Annexure V(E). Disability status alone does not establish an exemption: check the listed conditions and the board’s submission instructions. Official notification, section 13.4.
The cited documents do not explicitly settle individual keyboard behaviour such as whether Backspace will work. Check the applicable official interface instructions instead of relying on an unsourced keyboard rule.
A practical preparation checklist
The following is a suggested study routine, not an additional RRB requirement:
Create a rules sheet. Record your CEN number, post, language, required speed and the date of the latest instruction you checked.
Practise a complete passage. Use a timer and resist restarting every time a line goes badly. A finished attempt gives you a useful error record.
Review accuracy separately. Compare your transcript with the original. Note repeated omissions, punctuation slips and troublesome letter combinations before your next attempt.
Use a simple progress log. Record date, passage, time, words typed and your own observed errors. Treat a practice website’s score as feedback unless its method matches your official instructions.
Recheck before the test. Confirm the current schedule, language selection, reporting requirements and any exemption paperwork from your RRB’s notices and call letter.
If you are reading this for another graduate or undergraduate NTPC notification, start with that notification’s selection procedure. Reuse the preparation checklist, but verify the examination rules independently.

Preparing an application image?
For the separate application task, use the RRB NTPC signature-size guide and checker. It distinguishes undergraduate and graduate cycles; typing-test rules do not determine upload specifications.
