How RRB NTPC net speed is calculated

RRB counts the words you type, works out your mistakes, excuses a small number of them, and then deducts ten words for every mistake that remains. Net speed is the words left over divided by the ten minutes of the test.

    1. Mistakes = full mistakes + half mistakes ÷ 2.
    2. Allowance = 5% of the words you typed. Mistakes up to this number are ignored.
    3. Counted mistakes = mistakes − allowance, but never below zero.
    4. Net speed = (words typed − counted mistakes × 10) ÷ 10 minutes.

This tool rounds the mistake allowance down to the nearest half mistake. That is a practice assumption; the cited Graduate notice does not specify rounding.

    Original practice examples

    • Meets the speed benchmark. 340 words typed with 12 full and 6 half mistakes. Mistakes = 12 + 3 = 15. Allowance = 5% of 340 = 17, so no mistakes are counted. Net speed = 340 ÷ 10 = 34 wpm, above 30.
    • Below the speed benchmark. 320 words typed with 20 full and 8 half mistakes. Mistakes = 20 + 4 = 24. Allowance = 16, so 8 mistakes are counted and 80 words are deducted. Net speed = (320 − 80) ÷ 10 = 24 wpm, below 30.
    • Disqualified despite speed. 380 words typed on a 400-word passage that was never finished. Under the Graduate instructions this is a disqualification; under the Undergraduate instructions it is scored normally.

The result screen prints this same arithmetic with your own numbers after every attempt, and marks each mistake on the passage so you can see where the deduction came from.

RRB NTPC typing speed in words and keystrokes

The cited RRB instructions give a word-based speed formula; they do not define how the software separates words. This tool counts groups of characters separated by whitespace. Thirty words per minute for ten minutes gives 300 words before mistake penalties. Review accuracy alongside speed; no practice speed guarantees qualification.

    How this practice screen works

In this tool, the passage appears above the typing box and a countdown runs at the top. The default RRB profile disables Backspace, Delete and arrow keys and hides live speed. Those interface choices are practice settings; check the official instructions for your actual test. The CEN 05/2024 Graduate notice requires the passage to be completed once and allows retyping from the beginning afterward.

Which mistakes are full and which are half

The cited RRB Graduate instructions use full and half mistakes without listing detailed categories. This tool uses the following categories for practice feedback; they should not be treated as an official RRB classification:

    • Full mistakes: an omitted word, an added or repeated word, a wrong word, a spelling error, and an incomplete word.
    • Half mistakes: a wrong capital letter, a punctuation slip, a missing or extra space between words, and two neighbouring words typed in the wrong order.

In this tool, two words joined without a space count as one half mistake. Its comparison method keeps a skipped word from shifting every later match. These are practice scoring choices, not a prediction of official marking.

    How to prepare

    • Try an uninterrupted attempt and review errors afterward. Confirm key behaviour from official instructions before choosing restrictions for practice.
    • Build speed gradually while reducing recurring errors. Compare your evaluated practice speed with the requirement, without treating it as a guaranteed result.
    • Keep going after the last word: the 300-word minimum means you will usually retype the opening of the passage.
