SSC CHSL means the Staff Selection Commission's Combined Higher Secondary (10+2) Level Examination. It recruits candidates for Group C clerical and data-entry posts. In the verified 2025 notification, SSC CHSL salary starts at ₹19,900 basic pay for LDC/JSA and ₹25,500 or ₹29,200 for DEO, depending on the pay level. Allowances and deductions determine the amount actually received.

Source review: 7 October 2026. This guide explains the SSC CHSL 2025 notification, dated 23 June 2025, with the relevant March 2026 typing-test correction. A detailed 2026 notification was not verified in this review. The rules below are labelled by cycle; they are not a claim about a later recruitment. The 2025 application window has closed. Check the current CHSL notice and application window on SSC's website before applying.

SSC CHSL full form and what the exam is for

SSC stands for Staff Selection Commission; CHSL stands for Combined Higher Secondary Level. The “10+2” in the examination's official name refers to the Class 12 level of the qualification. It is an examination for recruitment to specified central government offices and bodies, not the name of a single job.

The 2025 notice lists Lower Divisional Clerk (LDC), Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA), Data Entry Operator (DEO) and DEO Grade A. Use the post list in your own notification: a post mentioned in an older CHSL article is not automatically part of every later cycle. Official scope and post list: notification introduction and §1.

The 2025 notice gives basic pay scales, not a guaranteed monthly amount in your bank account. It lists three post families and two possible pay levels for DEO. Source: 2025 notice, §1.

Starting basic pay is the first basic-pay figure in the level. Scale maximum is the upper point of that basic-pay scale; it is not a new recruit's first salary. A DEO vacancy's level depends on the post offered, so do not assume that every DEO appointment starts at ₹29,200. The table is taken from §1 of the 2025 SSC notice.

Gross monthly pay adds applicable allowances to basic pay. Net or in-hand pay is what remains after applicable deductions. These amounts can change with posting location, allowances, deductions and individual circumstances. In simple terms: gross pay = basic pay + applicable allowances, and in-hand pay = gross pay − applicable deductions. The official CHSL notice does not give one universal in-hand salary or a current dearness allowance (DA) or house rent allowance (HRA) calculation. Treat online figures that present one exact take-home amount for all CHSL posts with care.

For a basic-pay comparison, Level 4 starts ₹5,600 above Level 2, while Level 5 starts ₹9,300 above Level 2. Those differences are arithmetic comparisons of the notice's basic-pay figures, not differences in guaranteed take-home pay.

When comparing two offers, ask for the exact post, department, pay level and posting location. Then use the applicable government pay and allowance orders and a current salary slip or appointment terms to estimate gross and net. The scale's top figure is useful for understanding the level's range, but it cannot tell you what you will receive in your first month.

Which SSC CHSL post should you choose?

LDC and JSA are clerical posts; DEO and DEO Grade A are data-entry posts. The 2025 notice recruits them across different central offices and bodies. Actual duties depend on the department. The higher basic-pay starting point for a DEO level is only one factor: eligibility, skill-test speed, location and available vacancies matter too. Source: 2025 notice, introduction and §§1–2.

Use this decision checklist before ranking post preferences:

  1. Check your Class 12 subjects. In the 2025 cycle, DEO/DEO Grade A in the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Ministry of Culture and SSC required Class 12 Science with Mathematics. LDC/JSA and other DEO/DEO Grade A posts required Class 12 or equivalent from a recognised board or university. The 2025 qualification cut-off was 1 January 2026. Check the new cycle's cut-off and post list before assuming the same rules. Source: 2025 notice, §8.1–8.3.

  2. Check age against the cycle's cut-off date. The 2025 notice used 1 January 2026 and an 18–27 age range: ordinarily, date of birth from 2 January 1999 to 1 January 2008, with category-specific relaxations. That is not a standing cut-off for future CHSL exams. The 2025 table allowed upper-age relaxation of 5 years for Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST) and 3 years for Other Backward Classes (OBC), with separate provisions for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), eligible ex-servicemen and other listed categories. Read the full category conditions before deciding eligibility. You can use our age calculator with the notification's reference date; it does not decide category eligibility. Source: 2025 notice, §5.

  3. Match the skill test to your ability. In 2025, specified DEO departments required 15,000 key depressions per hour; other DEO posts required 8,000. LDC/JSA typing was 35 words per minute in English or 30 in Hindi. These were qualifying tests, but failing the applicable test could stop selection. Practise accurately, not just quickly. Source: 2025 notice, §13.8.13.

  4. Check post-specific conditions. The 2025 notice flagged physical and medical standards for LDC in the Border Roads Organisation, if such vacancies were reported. Do not put a post high in your preferences until you have checked all its conditions. Source: 2025 notice, §§4.3–4.4, 15.4, 17.12.

  5. Rank only posts you would accept and can qualify for. In 2025, SSC collected final post and department preferences through a later online option form, before the final result. Missing a preference meant no consideration for that post; submitted choices were final. Read the notice and portal instructions for the cycle you apply to. Source: 2025 notice, §17.8–17.12.

SSC CHSL exam pattern: what did the 2025 notice say?

The SSC CHSL exam in the verified 2025 notice had two computer-based tiers. Tier I shortlisted candidates for Tier II. Tier II had four sections across two sessions on the same day. Do not rely on an older diagram that leaves out the Computer Knowledge or Skill/Typing section. Source: 2025 notice, §13.1, §13.7–13.8.

For Section I the split was 30 Maths and 30 Reasoning questions. Section II had 40 English and 20 General Awareness questions. Session I lasted 2 hours 15 minutes at standard timing. Section III's 20-minute figure applied to candidates eligible for compensatory time; its standard duration was 15 minutes. The notice gave extra time for eligible candidates in other sections too. Tier II's first three sections carried one negative mark per wrong answer. Section IV was a practical test, with the applicable DEO or typing standard. Source: 2025 notice, §13.8 and timing table.

How final selection worked in 2025: Clearing Tier I took you to Tier II; a Tier I score did not get added to the final merit list. In Tier II, candidates had to qualify the required sections. SSC used the combined marks from Sections I and II for the merit list, subject to qualifying Section III (Computer Knowledge) and Section IV (Skill/Typing). Post preferences and eligibility then affected allocation. For Tier I and Sections I, II and III of Tier II, the minimum qualifying percentages were 30% for Unreserved (UR), 25% for OBC/Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and 20% for other categories. These minimums were not the selection cut-offs: actual shortlisting cut-offs could be higher and vary by post. Source: 2025 notice, §17.1–17.12.

This distinction helps with preparation. Tier I needs speed and accuracy to clear the screening cut-off. Tier II Sections I and II need sustained attention because those marks determine merit. The computer and typing or skill tests also need deliberate practice: “qualifying” does not mean optional.

How to apply for SSC CHSL when a new form is available

Use the official SSC portal and open the CHSL notice for the cycle you want. Read its dates and any corrigenda first. The following workflow reflects §9 and Annexures III–IVA of the 2025 notice; the live form can change.

  1. Check eligibility and the deadline. Read age, education, category, disability provisions and post-specific conditions. Keep your Class 10 and Class 12 records ready so names and dates match the certificates.

  2. Create or use your SSC one-time registration (OTR). The 2025 process used the new ssc.gov.in registration; an OTR on the older ssc.nic.in site did not work there. Follow the current portal prompts for authentication. Source: 2025 notice, §9.1–9.3.

  3. Open the correct CHSL application. Fill personal and education details carefully. Choose exam centres, available language options and, where asked, the LDC/JSA typing-test medium. In 2025 the typing-medium choice could not be changed later. Source: 2025 notice, §§12.2, 13.8.13.7.

  4. Follow the current image instructions exactly. The 2025 form captured a live photograph through the application module. A photo of an old printed or digital photograph was not a substitute. The 2025 notice separately required a scanned JPEG/JPG signature of 10–20 KB. Use RojgarRank's exam image compressor only if you need to prepare your own signature file to the current notice's size and format. It cannot replace SSC's live-photo capture or guarantee acceptance. Source: 2025 notice, §9.4–9.6.

  5. Preview, pay if required, and save proof. The 2025 application fee was ₹100, with exemptions for women, SC, ST and PwBD candidates, and for ex-servicemen eligible for reservation. Check the current cycle's fee and exemption rules. Confirm that payment status and application status show completion, then save the submitted form. Source: 2025 notice, §§9.11, 10.

Avoid these common mistakes: using an old exam notice as a live application link; assuming Class 12 Science with Maths is needed for every DEO post, or for none; selecting a typing medium casually; uploading a prepared photo where the portal asks for a live capture; trusting a payment attempt without checking status; and waiting until the final hour to submit. The 2025 notice warned that incomplete fee payment meant an incomplete application and advised early submission. Source: 2025 notice, §§8.1–8.3, 9.4–9.11, 10.5.

Typing and data-entry test: choose the right practice target

The 2025 notification set different tests for clerical and data-entry posts. Key depressions per hour (KDPH) and words per minute (wpm) are different measures; practise the test that applies to your post.

Post group

Speed required in the 2025 notice

Standard test duration

LDC/JSA, English typing

35 wpm

10 minutes

LDC/JSA, Hindi typing

30 wpm

10 minutes

DEO/DEO Grade A in the departments named in §8.1

15,000 KDPH

15 minutes

Other DEO/DEO Grade A posts

8,000 KDPH

15 minutes

The §8.1 group comprises the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Ministry of Culture and SSC. Correct entry matters: the speed standards are assessed with accuracy. The notice provides compensatory time for eligible candidates. Official skill and typing rules: §13.8.13.

The DEO skill test is mandatory, with no exemption under the cited notice. The LDC/JSA typing exemption is conditional, not automatic for every person with a disability. Read the 25 March 2026 corrigendum for the 2025 cycle and the applicable regional instructions. Its document-submission deadline was specific to that cycle and has passed.

For preparation, record both speed and errors in timed practice. Build typing accuracy alongside the written subjects so that a qualifying practical test does not become a last-minute obstacle.

Frequently asked questions
