  1. India Receives Fourth S-400 Air Defence Missile System from Russia

India is set to receive its fourth squadron of the Russian-origin S-400 long-range surface-to-air missile system by mid-May 2026. Originally contracted in 2018 for five S-400 squadrons at a cost of $5.43 billion, India faced delivery delays due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The fourth system will be deployed in Rajasthan to strengthen air defence along the western border, while the fifth is expected by November 2026 near the northern border with China. With the Defence Acquisition Council approving five more S-400 units recently, India's air defence capabilities are poised for substantial expansion. Additionally, India approved acquiring 288 anti-aircraft missiles to replenish stocks after the May 2025 Operation Sindoor, where S-400 systems proved their operational effectiveness.

  4. Delhi-NCR Transport Unions Announce Three-Day Strike Over Fare Hike and Regulation Issues

From May 21 to 23, 2026, commercial transport unions in Delhi-NCR declared a strike demanding immediate fare hikes for taxis, auto-rickshaws, trucks, and goods vehicles. The strike arises due to surging operating costs driven by rising CNG, petrol, and diesel prices and objections to the increased Environment Compensation Charge (ECC) and stricter BS-IV vehicle regulations in Delhi. Key unions like the Chalak Shakti Union and the national All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) have led the movement. While taxi and auto strike plans were partially paused, truck and goods vehicle unions continue, demanding rollback of the ECC hike and the ban on non-Delhi registered BS-IV vehicles from November 1, 2026. The strike highlights ongoing tensions related to pollution control measures and economic challenges in the transport sector.
