  2. CURAJ Develops Low-Cost Lead Detection Sensor for Drinking Water

On 22 June 2026, researchers at the Central University of Rajasthan (CURAJ) in Jaipur developed an innovative sensor to detect trace amounts of toxic lead ions in drinking water directly, without requiring additional chemicals, buffers, or reagents. The device is cost-effective, user-friendly, and stable for mass production, aimed at use in homes and municipal water systems. Lead contamination in water often goes unnoticed as it does not alter water color or taste, but it poses significant health risks, particularly affecting children's nervous system and brain development. The sensor was tested successfully in tap water and major Indian rivers, including the Ganges and Brahmaputra, across a temperature range of 5°C to 45°C. The project, led by Assistant Professor Pankaj Gupta, involved collaboration with Finnish nanotechnology company CANATU. CURAJ’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Anand Bhalerao, supports the university's ongoing research and innovation efforts.
