All of July 2026 →Mount Erebus: The Southernmost Active Volcano Spewing Microscopic Gold Crystals
Mount Erebus, located on Ross Island in Antarctica approximately 1,350 km from the South Pole, is the southernmost active volcano on Earth. It features a persistent lava lake and has been continuously erupting since at least 1972. Uniquely, Mount Erebus emits microscopic elemental gold crystals daily, approximately 80 grams, which disperse up to 1,000 kilometers away. These gold particles are faceted, crystalline, and can be up to 60 micrometers in diameter. Although valued economically (around $6,000 per day), recovery is impractical due to the crystals' microscopic size and widespread distribution. Scientific studies since 1991 have documented this phenomenon, though the precise mechanism of gold crystallization and emission remains under investigation, with theories involving volcanic gases containing chlorine or sulfur bearing compounds.
Arul Mihu Navasakthi Vinayagar Temple, Seychelles
The Arul Mihu Navasakthi Vinayagar Temple is the only Hindu temple located in Victoria, the capital city of Seychelles on Mahé Island. It showcases traditional South Indian Dravidian architecture with a prominent multi-colored gopuram (entrance tower) that rises to about 100 feet. Festivals like Thaipusam and Hindu Chariot Procession are celebrated here, and in 2026, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the temple during his state visit to Seychelles.
Southern Birdwing Butterfly Recorded for the First Time in Telangana's Amrabad Tiger Reserve
On 27 June 2026, the Southern Birdwing butterfly (Troides minos), India’s second-largest butterfly species, was documented for the first time in Telangana, specifically in the Amrabad Tiger Reserve of the Nallamala Hills. This striking butterfly is endemic to South India and predominantly found in the Western Ghats across Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra. The species is recognized for its large wingspan (140–190 mm) and distinctive black and yellow wing patterns. Karnataka has designated it as its state butterfly. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies the Southern Birdwing as Least Concern, reflecting its relatively stable population and distribution.

NEC Corporation serves as the system supplier, and ASEAN Cableship handles marine installation. The project aims to be ready for service by Q4 2029, targeting the growing demand for hyperscalers and enterprises managing AI workloads across the India–Southeast Asia corridor.
Inauguration of Advanced Common Incubation Centre in Parbhani, Maharashtra under PMFME Scheme
On 28 June 2026, Union Minister Chirag Paswan inaugurated a Common Incubation Centre at Vasantrao Naik Marathwada Krishi Vidyapeeth in Parbhani, Maharashtra. Set up under the Ministry of Food Processing Industries and the Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) Scheme, this centre supports micro and small food processing enterprises by providing shared facilities for processing, training, product development, and quality testing. The centre focuses on jaggery, sugarcane juice, and spices processing, aiding local value addition, entrepreneur training, and product testing. This aligns with efforts to formalise micro food processing units to boost employment and rural economic growth.
Kodaikanal Solar Observatory Uses AI to Study Over a Century of Solar Magnetic Activity
Researchers employed artificial intelligence to analyze digitized solar observations from 1904 to 2022 at the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory (KoSO), Tamil Nadu. This analysis used a U-Net-based machine learning model to detect solar plages—bright, magnetically active regions—across nine solar cycles. The study generated a continuous record of solar magnetic activity, aiding the understanding of solar cycle evolution and space weather. This research, led by the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences under DST, integrates data across institutions including the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology and culminates in findings published in The Astrophysical Journal.
GAGAN: India's Indigenous Satellite-Based Augmentation System for Aviation
GAGAN (GPS Aided GEO Augmented Navigation) is India's regional Satellite-Based Augmentation System (SBAS), developed jointly by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to enhance satellite navigation accuracy and integrity over Indian airspace. Operational since 2015, it leverages a network of 15 reference stations, 2 Master Control Centres, 3 uplink stations, and geostationary satellites GSAT-8, GSAT-10, and GSAT-15 to provide precision navigation support. It enables improved civil aviation safety via Localizer Performance with Vertical Guidance (LPV) approaches and has applications beyond aviation such as maritime navigation, railways, road transport, disaster management, telecommunications, defence, and geospatial mapping. India is the first country to have an SBAS certified for equatorial regions, and integration with NavIC is underway to bolster sovereign satellite navigation capabilities.
