The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has cleared the conversion of Lahori Gate Haveli in Old Delhi into the Shahjahanabad Museum and Interpretation Centre. The Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) has given in-principle approval. The museum itself has not opened: as of 5 October 2026, it is a cleared project with an MoU, construction and opening still to come. The report is dated 5 October 2026 (GKToday). It does not give an exact date for the MCD clearance.

What has happened and what has not

The source says MCD finalised the proposal in August 2026. That is the only dated step in the 2026 approval process. The table below sorts each item by status as of 5 October 2026.

About Lahori Gate Haveli

Location and history

The haveli is a heritage building in Khari Baoli, Old Delhi, at Vasudev Captain Chowk. It was built in 1929, which makes it about 97 years old. It worked as a single-room dispensary until 2003. The restored building is planned as a public heritage space.

Conservation

The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) prepared the conservation plan for the haveli. The source does not say how the plan was carried out.

What the museum is planned to show

Shahjahanabad was the walled city founded by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century. The museum is meant to tell its story in chronological order. The planned tools are:

  • artefacts and crafts;
  • digital databases;
  • narrative panels;
  • audio-visual tools;
  • galleries on how the city evolved;
  • digital reconstructions of historic structures.

The source does not list specific objects or say how many galleries there will be.

Funding

The Union culture ministry sanctioned ₹4.22 crore in 2017 under the Museum Grant Scheme for the project. The source does not say how much has been released or spent, or whether the 2026 plan needs more money. Treat ₹4.22 crore as the sanctioned amount, not as a confirmed final cost.

Exam-relevant context

This is general background for Art & Culture and current-affairs preparation. It does not suggest that any question will appear in an exam.

  • Shahjahanabad: the historical name of Old Delhi, a walled city founded by Shah Jahan.
  • Museum Grant Scheme: a central government funding route for museum projects. This project received its sanction in 2017.
  • IGNCA: a major autonomous institution under the Ministry of Culture. It gave in-principle approval here.
  • INTACH: a heritage conservation organisation. It prepared the haveli's conservation plan.
  • Do not confuse place names: Lahori Gate is in Delhi's Old City. It has no connection with Lahore in Pakistan or its museums.

Limits of the available evidence

  • The account rests on one news item. No MCD, IGNCA or culture ministry document was available to check it.
  • The exact date of the MCD clearance and the in-principle approval is not given.
  • The source does not say whether work started in September 2026 or whether the MoU has been signed. Both should be read as pending or unconfirmed.
  • The completion and opening dates are plans, not results.
