All rules for this test
  • The test lasts 10 minutes. The timer starts when the test screen opens.
  • Backspace, Delete and the arrow keys work, so you can correct mistakes.
  • Typing stops at the last word of the passage: the space bar does nothing after it.
  • Start each paragraph with one press of the Tab key, not spaces.
  • To pass: about 1,750 key depressions (10,500 per hour) with errors within your category's limit: UR 7%, OBC/EWS/SC/ST/PwBD 10%.
  • In this tool, wrong, missing, extra or incomplete words are full mistakes; capital letters, punctuation, spacing and swapped words are half mistakes.
  • Paste, copy, right-click and spell-check are switched off. The test submits itself at 00:00.
  • 35 wpm in English means about 10,500 key depressions per hour, or 1,750 in 10 minutes.
  • Error limits UR 7%, other categories 10% come from earlier SSC result notices; the 2026 notice does not print them.
  • Error % is taken over the words in the passage, and words not typed count as omissions (assumed: SSC caps typing at the passage length; no notice states the base).
  • Key depressions are counted as the characters of your final text, including spaces.

SSC CHSL typing test at a glance

    • LDC/JSA typing test: 35 wpm in English (10,500 key depressions an hour) or 30 wpm in Hindi, for 10 minutes.
    • DEO skill test: 15 minutes in English; Part A at 15,000 and Part B at 8,000 key depressions an hour.
    • Errors allowed: earlier SSC results used 7% (UR) and 10% (others) for typing, 5% and 7% for DEO.
    • Editing: Backspace and arrow keys allowed; start each paragraph with Tab.
    • Passage end: the space bar stops at the passage's last word.

How the SSC typing test is scored

SSC does not use net words per minute. It checks two things separately: whether you typed enough key depressions in the time, and whether your mistakes stay within the percentage allowed for your category.

    1. Key depressions are the characters you type, including spaces. Five key depressions count as one word, so 35 wpm for 10 minutes is 1,750 key depressions, or 10,500 an hour.
    2. Mistakes = full mistakes + half mistakes ÷ 2.
    3. Error % = mistakes ÷ words in the passage × 100, to two decimal places.
    4. Qualify when the error % is within your category's limit and your key depressions reach the requirement.

    Worked example

A 350-word passage typed in full with 6 full and 5 half mistakes, by an unreserved candidate. Mistakes = 6 + 2.5 = 8.5. Error % = 8.5 ÷ 350 × 100 = 2.43%, within the 7% limit. The passage has 1,790 key depressions, above the 1,750 needed, so the attempt qualifies. The same attempt with 20 full and 10 half mistakes has 25 mistakes, 7.14%, and fails for an unreserved candidate but passes the 10% limit for other categories.

Full and half mistakes in SSC evaluation

SSC's revised evaluation guidelines of 20 June 2022 split errors into two weights:

    • Full mistakes: omission of a word, addition of a word, substitution of a wrong word, spelling errors, and incomplete words.
    • Half mistakes: spacing errors, wrong capitalisation, punctuation errors, transposition of words, and paragraph indentation with spaces instead of the Tab key.

The result screen marks each of these on your passage, with the category on every half mistake, and lists them by type so you know what to practise.

What the SSC test screen does

The passage is shown on screen above the typing box, with a countdown at the top. Backspace and the arrow keys work. Begin each paragraph with Tab. When you have typed as many words as the passage contains, the space bar stops working, so there is no benefit in typing past the end. Paste and spell-check are off and the test submits itself when time runs out.

DEO Part A and Part B

The DEO skill test is in English and lasts 15 minutes. Part A passages are long and data-heavy, at 3,700 to 4,000 key depressions with a requirement of 15,000 an hour. Part B passages are 2,000 to 2,200 key depressions at 8,000 an hour. Both practice pools here include dates, figures and abbreviations, which are where most DEO mistakes happen.

    How to prepare

    • Treat accuracy as the target. Speed is usually reached by candidates who practise daily; error limits are what most fail.
    • Use Backspace sparingly. A correction is free of penalty but costs time you may need to finish the passage.
    • Check the mistakes-by-type list: capitals and punctuation are half mistakes, but twenty of them still make ten.

    Frequently asked questions

What typing speed is needed for SSC CHSL?

For LDC and JSA posts, 35 words per minute in English or 30 in Hindi. SSC states this as about 10,500 key depressions per hour in English (9,000 in Hindi), counting five key depressions as one word. The test lasts 10 minutes, or 15 minutes for candidates allowed a scribe.

What is the SSC CHSL DEST for Data Entry Operators?

Data Entry Operator posts have a 15-minute Data Entry Speed Test in English. Part A needs 15,000 key depressions per hour on a passage of 3,700 to 4,000 key depressions. Part B needs 8,000 key depressions per hour on a passage of 2,000 to 2,200 key depressions.

How many mistakes are allowed in the SSC CHSL typing test?

The 2026 notice does not print the limits. Earlier SSC result notices used 7% for unreserved candidates and 10% for other categories in the typing test, and 5% and 7% in the DEO test. This tool uses those figures and will be updated if SSC publishes new ones.

How is the error percentage worked out?

Error % = (full mistakes + half mistakes ÷ 2) ÷ words in the passage × 100, to two decimal places. Words you do not reach count as omitted. No SSC notice we could read states whether the base is passage words or words typed; this tool uses passage words.

Is Backspace allowed in the SSC typing test?

SSC skill test notices from 2021 and 2022 allowed Backspace and the arrow keys, so they work in the SSC profiles here. Every correction still costs time.

What happens when I reach the end of the passage?

SSC stops the space bar at the passage word count, so you cannot type past the last word. Submit when you are done, or use the remaining time to correct mistakes.

Do I need to use the Tab key?

Yes. SSC asks candidates to begin each paragraph with the Tab key and leave one space after punctuation. Starting a paragraph with spaces instead of Tab is treated as a half mistake.

Can I give the SSC CHSL typing test in Hindi?

Yes, in Mangal (Unicode) font with Inscript, Krutidev, Remington GAIL or Remington CBI layouts. This tool currently covers English; Hindi keyboards are being added.
