All rules for this test
- The test lasts 10 minutes. The timer starts when the test screen opens.
- Backspace, Delete and the arrow keys work, so you can correct mistakes.
- Typing stops at the last word of the passage: the space bar does nothing after it.
- Start each paragraph with one press of the Tab key, not spaces.
- To pass: about 1,750 key depressions (10,500 per hour) with errors within your category's limit: UR 7%, OBC/EWS/SC/ST/PwBD 10%.
- In this tool, wrong, missing, extra or incomplete words are full mistakes; capital letters, punctuation, spacing and swapped words are half mistakes.
- Paste, copy, right-click and spell-check are switched off. The test submits itself at 00:00.
- 35 wpm in English means about 10,500 key depressions per hour, or 1,750 in 10 minutes.
- Error limits UR 7%, other categories 10% come from earlier SSC result notices; the 2026 notice does not print them.
- Error % is taken over the words in the passage, and words not typed count as omissions (assumed: SSC caps typing at the passage length; no notice states the base).
- Key depressions are counted as the characters of your final text, including spaces.

How SSC scores the typing test
SSC does not use net words per minute. It checks two things separately: whether you typed enough key depressions in the time, and whether your mistakes stay within your category’s limit.
- Key depressions are every character you type, including spaces. Five count as one word.
- Mistakes = full mistakes + half mistakes ÷ 2. Under SSC’s evaluation guidelines of 20 June 2022, omitted, added, wrong, misspelled and incomplete words are full mistakes. Spacing, capitalisation, punctuation, transposition and indenting with spaces instead of Tab are half mistakes.
- Error % = mistakes ÷ words in the passage × 100.
- You qualify when your key depressions reach the requirement and your error % is within your category’s limit.
SSC typing rules this practice follows
- Start each paragraph with the Tab key, not spaces.
- The space bar stops at the passage’s last word, so you cannot type past the end. Use any remaining time to correct mistakes.
- Backspace and arrow keys work, as in SSC’s 2021 and 2022 skill test notices.
- Copy, paste and select-all are disabled.
How to practise for the SSC typing test
- Start in Practice with help mode to see the current word highlighted and your live speed.
- Switch to Exam rules once you finish passages comfortably. The clock then starts when the test opens, as in the exam.
- Read the marked mistakes after each attempt. Half mistakes from spacing and capitalisation add up quickly, and most are avoidable.

Frequently asked questions
What is the SSC typing test?
It is the computer skill test in SSC exams. SSC CHSL has a typing test for LDC and JSA posts and a Data Entry Speed Test (DEST) for Data Entry Operators. SSC CGL has its own DEST, which the 2026 notice makes mandatory for all posts and qualifying only: its marks are not added to your merit score.
What typing speed is required for the SSC typing test?
For CHSL LDC/JSA, 35 words per minute in English or 30 in Hindi (10,500 or 9,000 key depressions per hour) for 10 minutes. For CGL DEST, about 2,000 key depressions in 15 minutes (8,000 per hour). For CHSL DEO, 15 minutes at 15,000 key depressions per hour in Part A or 8,000 in Part B.
How many mistakes are allowed in the SSC typing test?
It depends on the exam. The SSC CGL 2026 notice (paragraph 16.2) allows 20% for unreserved, 25% for OBC and EWS, and 30% for other candidates. The CHSL 2026 notice does not print limits; earlier SSC results used 7% and 10% for the typing test and 5% and 7% for DEO.
How does SSC count words in the typing test?
SSC counts key depressions: every letter, number, punctuation mark and space you type. Five key depressions count as one word, so 35 words per minute is 175 key depressions per minute.
Is Backspace allowed in the SSC typing test?
SSC skill test notices from 2021 and 2022 allowed Backspace and the arrow keys, so they work in the SSC profiles here. Every correction still costs time.
Can I take the SSC typing test in Hindi?
The CHSL typing test can be taken in Hindi, at 30 words per minute in Mangal (Unicode) font. This tool currently covers English; Hindi keyboards are being added.
