New Fungus Species 'Microporellus kolhapurensis' Discovered in Kolhapur

On 27 July 2026, a new species of polypore fungus named Microporellus kolhapurensis was discovered in Bhudargad taluka, Kolhapur district, Maharashtra. Identified by Dr Anjali Patil and research scholar Yogesh Patil, this species grows on rotting wood acting as a saprotrophic decomposer and contributes to forest nutrient recycling. The species expands knowledge of fungal biodiversity in Maharashtra and was officially published in Nelumbo, the research journal of the Botanical Survey of India.

Background & Context

Polypore fungi, commonly known as bracket fungi, typically grow on wood and produce pores on the underside of their fruiting bodies. They play a critical ecological role as saprotrophs by decomposing dead organic matter and recycling nutrients in forest ecosystems. The genus Microporellus comprises about 36 recognized species globally. Prior to this discovery, only Microporellus obovatus had been recorded from Maharashtra. Cataloguing such species increases understanding of forest biodiversity and fungal taxonomy, which uses morphological characters such as pore structure, spore shape, and cystidia for species identification.

Why This Matters for Exams / Exam Relevance

Competitive exams often include questions on biodiversity, recent species discoveries, and ecological functions of organisms. Remembering details about Microporellus kolhapurensis—such as its polypore nature, saprotrophic role, discovery date and location, and morphological traits—can aid in answering questions related to fungal taxonomy, ecology, and Maharashtra’s biodiversity.
