Discovery of Brachybacterium netajii: A Pollution-Degrading Bacterium from Hooghly River
Brachybacterium netajii is a newly discovered species of bacterium isolated from the Hooghly River in West Bengal, India. This Gram-positive, halotolerant bacterium degrades p-nitrophenol (PNP), a toxic industrial chemical used in dyes and pesticides, converting it into harmless by-products. It also tolerates high concentrations of heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury and survives in salt concentrations up to 9%. These traits make Brachybacterium netajii a promising candidate for bioremediation to clean up industrial wastewater and polluted water bodies, potentially reducing environmental contamination and remediation costs. The species honors Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, reflecting his legacy of advocating scientific progress and nation-building.
